What the iPhone does to the iPod

Yesterday Apple unveiled their highly anticipated phone, which actually went under the name iPhone. It has touch screen capabilities, wide screen technology, and internet features built right in to the phone. What does this do to the iPod?
I wrote about how Apple may be getting too big for their own good, and this is another step that they are taking that worries me. Apple has released a iPhone that is so much better than the iPod that it is more than a generation behind.

Before the iPhone so many people wanted an iPod that does half of what the iPhone is doing. As someone who is happy with their phone, and with T-Mobile, but not satisfied with an iPod I want another generation. I want to see widescreen, I want to see WiFi, but I am stuck with a 2.5 inch iPod with a poor battery life.
What is Apple’s plan with this device? Surely there are folks like me who do not want to drop five hundred dollars on a 4 Gigabyte iPod/phone. Hopefully Apple will see this market and keep the iPod alive.
